FAQs

WHAT KIND OF CAMERA DO YOU USE?

I use a variety of different cameras, both analogue and digital. A lot of my SLR and DSLR work is produced by freelensing, which is when you remove the lens of your camera before taking a picture. This produces a dreamy, blurry effect. Other cameras I enjoy using are my Rolleiflex, my Canonet, and my Instax/Polaroid cameras.

WHAT FILM DO YOU USE?

I love black and white film. Favorites include: Rollei Rpx, Ilford FP4 and HP5, and Lomography Lady Grey. As for color, you can’t beat Kodak Portra.

HOW DO YOU DEVELOP YOUR FILM?

Most of the time I send my film out to Old School Photo Lab, who have been developing for me for years. They are amazing and provide me scans so I can see my work before the negatives come home.

Other times, when I’m feeling extra, I will develop my film using Caffenol C-M which is a concoction made using instant coffee. It produces gritty, sepia-toned images that I just love.

HOW DO YOU PRINT YOUR PHOTOS?

Cyanotype has become the best method for me, as I can do it right in my kitchen. My husband built me a UV light box so I can print my photos rain or shine, day or night. Once they’re exposed, I rinse them in a vinegar and peroxide bath, then follow up with some extremely strong chai tea. Because of the aromatic quality of the tea I use, my prints often smell like tea!

DO YOU TEACH PHOTOGRAPHY?

I currently teach the members of the Capital Arts Kids’ Photography club. This is a free group that meets every other week at different locations, where we discuss different photography techniques, go on a walk with our cameras, then share our work with one another. I hope to add a film photography unit in my high school art curriculum very soon!

DO YOU DO WEDDINGS?

I do not. Weddings are a lot of work, and the pressure I’d feel to get everything perfect would hinder a lot of my creativity. I’m better with casual, low-maintenance situations that give me plenty of creative freedom.

WILL YOU TAKE PHOTOS OF ME/MY FAMILY?

I am not currently taking clients in for photography, but I will definitely update when/if I do!
